I forgot about my starter!!!

This is what my refrigerator looks like.

Is it any wonder then that when I was putting away groceries tonight and cleaning my refrigerator that clear in the very back I found a jar of sourdough starter?

I wish I had taken a picture of it right then! It had green liquid floating on the top! Sahara and I said, “Ewwwww!”  (insert lots of giggling and pointing and weird girly noises)

Later, looking at that jar of sourdough starter, I was sad to throw it out. I spent a lot of time this summer figuring out how to make sourdough bread and figuring out how to keep my starter alive. I used that starter to teach my future daughter in law how to bake homemade bread. I used that starter to make buns for my 4th of July picnic party. Also, my kids will tell you I am cheap! I  call it frugal; they call it cheap. I just can’t stand to waste anything that I think has possible use. Tomato, tomahto I say!

I started doing a little online research and found out that the green liquid is called hooch. It’s actually alcohol! According to some different websites I read, miners would sometimes drink this when they got hard up for some alcohol to drink . I poured it off down the sink, and I follow the directions on this website: http://sourdoughhome.com/index.php?content=revivingastarter

I’ll have to see how it goes, and then I’ll report back and let you know. I’m hoping I am able to save the starter.

Right now it’s setting on my counter but I don’t see any bubbles yet. It sure does smell super sour though!

The extra starter is in its original jar and back in the refrigerator. If this batch of starter on the counter works, then I’ll be able to save the batch in the refrigerator, too!
