...waiting around for mice on top of the chicken run. Evidently we must have a few out there because this has been the cats' hangout spot for the past couple of days! I'm thinking there won't be many mice there for long.

I DID IT!!!
This farming thing just got real, folks. I signed today on 10 acres and a big building (electric! cement floor!) that I'm going to turn into a barn and raw milk herdshare operation. I will officially own it in a little over five years. Right now I own about a sixth of it until it's … Continue reading I DID IT!!!
They’re back
We lost both roosters, two hens, and the young chick that hatched this summer. This all happened Saturday night. I have lost a couple over the past two weeks, but I thought they'd flown out of the run to roost in a tree but then were grabbed at night. I was wrong. These were killed … Continue reading They’re back
Getting these pics
Getting pictures of the animals to add to this blog is not the easiest thing in the world to do. Sometimes these animals simply will not cooperate. Sometimes they make silly faces which I know only look silly to me so I don't usually share those. Sometimes they run away move right as I'm snapping … Continue reading Getting these pics
He’s back!!!
I went out at 8:45 Friday morning to let the chickens into the run, and I stopped dead in my tracks. The chicken hawk, the one who stole away with a good portion of my flock earlier this summer, was IN MY DRIVEWAY! He was staring intently at my hens through their pen, trying to … Continue reading He’s back!!!
New girls
I picked up two Black Copper Maran hens today (and a rooster but he goes to Becky). Everybody else was quite interested in the new girls. They integrated into the flock with only a small squabble with the smallest hen I have (she was not going to any lower on the pecking order LOL). These … Continue reading New girls
Chick update
She's so fast I can't get good pictures of her! She's feathered out everywhere but her head now, and she's about the size of a softball. She's healthy and thriving!
Local breakfast
I made omelets for breakfast today. The eggs were from my hens; the green pepper was picked from my garden just a minute before going into the cast iron skillet, and the purple onion was from the local farmers' market. The butter was the only ingredient from the store, and next summer that will be … Continue reading Local breakfast
Chick update
This little chick is doing great and growing like a weed! It's hard to get good pictures because Mama Hen is still super protective and will flog anybody/anything she deems a slight threat to her baby. Mama Hen decided they don't need to be separated from the flock anymore. She takes her all over the … Continue reading Chick update
Produce galore!
There were soooo many bags of apples gifted to me that I couldn't let Bessie and the Terrible Twosome have them all (too many could cause bloat). I gave them about 50 apples and gave the rest to the turkeys and chickens. The turkeys went wild for these things. Getting extra or soft veggies and … Continue reading Produce galore!
