Peeps and more peeps!

This is Romeo.  He's 22 days old today.  His little comb is showing up, his down is pretty much gone, and his feathers are growing. For size comparison,  this is the chick that hatched late last night. She's one day old. She came from a Maran egg, so I'm super excited to see what her … Continue reading Peeps and more peeps!

I think Beef did it!

We filled the water tank, and when we went back to turn off the hose, the tank was knocked over partway. Ted got the tractor in there with the plan to lift the tank with the tractor. That didn't work, so he rocked it until he could lift it by hand. I think Beef knocked … Continue reading I think Beef did it!

When it rains, it pours!

Literally! I waited a little too long to do the evening farm chores, and I got caught in the downpour! I looked like a drowned rat. I felt like one, too, because I had to walk back home in it AFTER spending twenty minutes working in it!

Buried treasure (for us!)

I came home the other night, and Ted was so excited. He was watering the cattle when he noticed something sticking up out of the weeds near Grampa Eddie's old garage. He said he kept looking at it and decided to dig it out.  Literally - once he started digging, part of it was underground … Continue reading Buried treasure (for us!)

Take two…

The blade on the tractor isn't cutting it. It collects too much dirt and not enough debris. We drove to another Rural King that the Kubota dealership guy recommended, and we bought a rake. Yes, we brought an 8' tractor rake home in my minivan! Chrysler,  you should really feature our farm use of your … Continue reading Take two…

Firewood!

All the wild cherry trees had to be cleared out of the new pasture land. Bob pushed them all into one big pile with the bulldozer. Ted has been going down there after work a few nights a week and cutting up those cherry trees. I had him cut them in about 15 inch lengths … Continue reading Firewood!

Junk drawer success

At the local auction Saturday night,  I bought four of those little organizer boxes for $2 total. They're normally $3 each so I got a great deal! As soon as I got home, I knew exactly what to do with the boxes: organize the junk drawer!  It was already somewhat organized, but everything didn't fit … Continue reading Junk drawer success

Mommy’s little helper

Saturday afternoon, Jake and I did a little gardening.  I taught him about composting the chicken house droppings with leaves and showed him how beautiful the black dirt is that it makes. Then we planted a bleeding heart root and a bunch of zinnia seeds... ...and a whole lot of dandelions!

Peepers update

80% of the eggs hatched! Not only that, ALL of the hatchlings are thriving so far! Romeo (the first hatched) is a little bully. He pecks the other chicks and chases them around the pen. He's the sweetest little thing when we handle him though; he's so tame he jumps right up on my hand … Continue reading Peepers update

New pasture

This past Sunday, we decided to move the cattle. The ground was just too wet where they were, and it just didn't have enough space for them. Ted was moving the fence a little everyday, but they were clipping the grass almost to the ground. We got them to move away from the bottom portion … Continue reading New pasture
