There were no eggs in the nest box Monday. I figured Cooper ate them all again (a startlingly easy task for that little 10 pound egg sucking dog). I know. He looks so innocent, doesn't he? Don't let him fool you. He makes a beeline for the barn everyday at lunch unless I watch him … Continue reading Sneaky hens

This old basket
I bought this old basket three years ago at a yard sale. The 93 year old woman told me that when she was a little girl, she watched her mother used it to gather vegetables from their garden. I used it this morning to chase two ornery goats away from my daylilies and into the … Continue reading This old basket
Exploring more of the world
The pullets are seven weeks old today. They have been in the barn in the growing out portion of it (where they and all the hens and roosters can see each other but not beat up peck each other. This morning I opened the covered run and let them have free reign of the huge … Continue reading Exploring more of the world
Green house experiment
One of those many projects I am working on this week: I threw down two huge packets of wildflower seeds in this flower bed and busted open an old pie pumpkin and scattered those seeds. Then bricks were set down with cardboard and a little foam on top of them and two old sliding glass … Continue reading Green house experiment
Chick update
The chicks are growing like crazy! They are all starting to feather out on their wings and backs (that means they are losing their fluffiness and starting to resemble little chickens). This is one of the Dark Brahmas. These are gaining weight much faster than the other breeds and also are more aggressive than the … Continue reading Chick update

We missed working like this!
We had gorgeous weather the past two days (Friday and Saturday). We worked and worked outside. The chickens tried to help in their own way. I hired a couple of teenage boys to clean the barn, till the big flowerbed, and help me rip out the old weedliner in the front. It's going to all … Continue reading We missed working like this!
Spring is definitely on the way!
When I went to gather eggs today, this is what I found. These two lovely ladies are getting in the mood to raise some babies. These eggs aren't fertile, but once the girls start chasing me out of the hen house (literally), that's when I know that spring babies are truly on the way!
Put those birds to work!
Did you know your chickens can work for you? Pick a spot you intend to garden and fill it with dead leaves, compost, etc. Turn your chickens out and sprinkle some feed on that patch of land. Your birds will scratch and dig happily for hours, shredding the leaves, aerating the compost, and depositing and … Continue reading Put those birds to work!
Plans, plans, plans
Every winter, I draw and sketch and plan and scheme what my little farm will look like next summer, how it will change, where my vision for it will lead next. This winter has been no different. I have tons of papers on my desk and sites galore bookmarked. This year though is a little … Continue reading Plans, plans, plans
