Need chicks? Consider buying from us!

It's that time of year again: the time when the cute and fuzzy little chicks fill the water troughs at the local feed stores.  Around here, those little chicks run about $1.99 - $2.69 each for straight run. Consider buying from Striving Acres this year! We are taking orders for straight run chicks (meaning I … Continue reading Need chicks? Consider buying from us!

My next little project

I was stoked to find this beauty on a local Facebook sale group for just $15.  I've had it in the back of my mind for months that I'd like to create a floating house and have ducks on our big pond.  My idea involves an old doghouse, a pallet, and several plastic barrels, and … Continue reading My next little project

I’m back home…

I had a work meeting which took me about five hours from home for two days this week. There was a horrible storm all over our state the first night.  I was at dinner with a friend, and we didn't realize how bad it was until I started to drive the 30 miles back to … Continue reading I’m back home…

Replacement canning supplies

If you shop yard sales, you might run across a black granite water bath canner. These are usually just a few dollars. Often, though, they're missing the rack and bottom piece which are essential for canning correctly. I was in a Do It Center (hardware store) and ran across this display of canning items. There … Continue reading Replacement canning supplies

Peeps move out

I couldn't stand it any longer: the peeps had to go! The dust in the bathroom was thick. They were starting to peck one another due to boredom and lack of space. Sahara, Jake, and I moved the peeps to the new coop this afternoon after school. Jake manned the coop door because Puppers was … Continue reading Peeps move out

New coop….slowly but surely

Work slowed to virtually none on the coop for a while (a bull jumping the fence will make all attention focus on fixing the fence!). Amazingly enough, 34 three week old chicks in the bathroom will cause work to accelerate on the new coop again in quick fashion! All that dust in my bathroom is … Continue reading New coop….slowly but surely

Peeps and more peeps!

This is Romeo.  He's 22 days old today.  His little comb is showing up, his down is pretty much gone, and his feathers are growing. For size comparison,  this is the chick that hatched late last night. She's one day old. She came from a Maran egg, so I'm super excited to see what her … Continue reading Peeps and more peeps!

I think Beef did it!

We filled the water tank, and when we went back to turn off the hose, the tank was knocked over partway. Ted got the tractor in there with the plan to lift the tank with the tractor. That didn't work, so he rocked it until he could lift it by hand. I think Beef knocked … Continue reading I think Beef did it!

When it rains, it pours!

Literally! I waited a little too long to do the evening farm chores, and I got caught in the downpour! I looked like a drowned rat. I felt like one, too, because I had to walk back home in it AFTER spending twenty minutes working in it!
