COST BREAKDOWN OF THE SOURDOUGH SANDWICH BREAD RECIPE

COST BREAKDOWN OF THE SOURDOUGH SANDWICH BREAD RECIPE

20 cups of flour in a 5 lb bag – $3.98 (Gold Medal unbleached white flour) = .199 cents per cup (so I will go with 20 cents per cup)

6 cups flour in my recipe so 6 x .20 = $1.20 for the flour

3 pkgs of yeast – $1.59 (Fleischmann’s) = .53 cents per pkg

1 pkg in my recipe so .53 cents for the yeast

1 cup sourdough starter (I do not even want to try to figure out what this stuff costs because some days I feed it a ¼ cup flour and water and other days I feed it an entire cup of flour and water) – since it just continues on and on, I will leave this as a blank figure (much like not figuring the cost of canning jars since I reuse them over and over until they break)

102 tsp in 17.6 oz Morton Sea Salt – $2.60 = .025 cents per tsp (so I will round up to 3 cents per tsp)

2 tsp in my recipe so 6 cents for the salt

348  tsp of sugar in a 4 lb bag (Domino’s) – $2.99/bag = .008 cents per tsp (so I will go with 2 cents on this one for 2 tsp)

2 cents for sugar in my recipe

96 tsp in a 1 lb box of baking soda (generic brand) – $0.79 = .008 cents per tsp (so I am tossing this cost in with the sugar since I really rounded up there)

Electricity for running oven – I found the answer here: http://wiki.answers.com/Q/How_much_does_it_cost_to_run_and_electric_oven_for_1_hour

An hour costs 15 cents so I will go with that for the oven since I preheated it for about five minutes before sliding in the loaves and baking them for 40 minutes

TOTAL COST OF TWO LOAVES OF SANDWICH BREAD

$1.96

TOTAL COST FOR A LOAF = 98 cents!!!  This one is a keeper!!!
