During the winter, I was buying a type of tomato at Walmart called Ugly Heirloom Tomaties. They were two to a pack and were $4-$5/pack. The cores were always tossed over the porch railing to my chickens. Walmart quit selling these (along with the hot dogs with no corn syrup and Annie’s Cheddar Bunnies and a few other organic items we loved but that’s a different rant post).
I noticed this spring that a volunteer tomato plant came up by the sidewalk. It had to be Ugly Tomatoes. That was the only kind I bought.
I gathered the first harvest Sunday morning. I could not believe how big these tomatoes were!!!!
Here is one slice next to a hamburger on a plate for reference. HUGE!!! And the TASTE!!!! MMMMMMMMMM……
Sahara said I should have weighed it. I didn’t even think of that.
I’m hoping to save seed from some of the harvest and set out about fifty of these next year. I could make all of our tomato juice, spaghetti sauce, salsa, pizza sauce, and chili starter from these things.
