The HAWKS are back!

I noticed them circling overhead a couple of days ago. I stood outside until they passed on to the next farm.  So far, I've not lost any of my chickens to them. I pulled up in the driveway bottom last night though, and one was sitting in the grass near the water meter. I think … Continue reading The HAWKS are back!

Adding a door

On Saturday,  we spent the afternoon working in the chicken coop. I cleaned it out, added the big set of nest boxes, and used the old bedding to plant grass in the old run. Ted worked on building a sliding door to go out to the new run. It's on a pulley system and can … Continue reading Adding a door

How to clip wings

Clipping wings is only done to deter flight; it keeps the chickens safe because if they fly out of their fence, Puppers and DG will kill them. Clipping wings is an easy but time consuming task when you have as many chickens as we currently have.    It doesn't hurt the chickens at all if done … Continue reading How to clip wings

Big moving day!

This is a big day for the older chicks! They're graduating from the broody house to the big coop! They're seven weeks old now and ready for the move. Usually, we do the move at night so when the older birds wake up, the littles are already in there, just like they're part of the … Continue reading Big moving day!

“New” broody cabinet

NOTE: I forgot to publish this post! I wrote it about three weeks ago.  This broody cabinet is so awesome though that I had to publish it! I am so tired of chicks in my bathroom!  They're just DUSTY!!! Their cute little fluff falls off, and their feathers start coming in, and they kick up … Continue reading “New” broody cabinet

Hurt chick – Reba – day three

This morning, the injured chick greeted me by jumping on top of her box in her cage and chirping at me. She also ate and drank all of the feed and water and tipped the dishes over so we're moving to regular chick dishes now. Her wing looks much better today! She's a survivor. I … Continue reading Hurt chick – Reba – day three

Hurt chick update

Wednesday morning she was up and waiting for me in her box! Her wing wound looked much better. I moved her to a small dog crate and put the box in it sideways to restrict her movement (I don't want her tiring out or pecking at her wing) and to give her a safe place … Continue reading Hurt chick update

Chicken doctorin’

One of the six week old chicks got herself caught in the little metal feeder Tuesday afternoon. She couldn't go forward because she was too fat, and she Evidently couldn't go backward because she couldn't lift her read enough to get it over the edge. She pecked and pecked at her own wing and a … Continue reading Chicken doctorin’

The last of the cherries

These were washed and frozen on parchment paper on a cookie sheet. I just jiggled the paper to break them apart afterward, and then I measured them into quart size freezer bags, labeled them, and put them in the deep freeze. These will make yummy pie and shortcakes at a later date!

Getting in hay

We still can't produce our own hay (yet!), so we have to purchase enough to last the winter and supplement in the summer.  I started on it early this summer and lined up two good round bale sources. We will pick up our bales through the summer as the farmers bale in the field. We … Continue reading Getting in hay
