One of the six week old chicks got herself caught in the little metal feeder Tuesday afternoon. She couldn’t go forward because she was too fat, and she Evidently couldn’t go backward because she couldn’t lift her read enough to get it over the edge. She pecked and pecked at her own wing and a little spot on her back, and four of the other little ones pecked her horribly, too.
Since I couldn’t see bone and she was still bright eyed and bushy tailed, I put her in a box in the bathroom and took off to Tractor Supply after firing off a “Help! What do I do???” Post to the Facebook group “Home Farm Ideas” (an excellent group for anybody who has a tiny farm!).
Since we’re trying to do everything as naturally as possible and since there weren’t any deep puncture wounds, I chose Poultry Wound Care spray.
It is tea tree oil, water, and other herbs mixed in it for soothing, anti-inflammatory, and anti-microbial properties. It smells pretty good, too!
I confined her to a small coffee pot box, and she ate and drank a little (always a good sign).
