Ted and I made a four hour round trip today to pick up 28 new hens. They are young five month old pullets, and they are just gorgeous and SO DOCILE AND SWEET! They should all start to lay eggs by late May. My goal is to have farm fresh eggs from pasture raised hens … Continue reading New girls!

Cheap Treats!
I had to get Jake new shoes after school yesterday and saw a bread outlet so decided to stop and ask about their waste stream. She stopped me halfway through my spiel and told me I could have 200 loaves for eight cents each ($16/200 loaves!). I was FLOORED! It was only two minutes of … Continue reading Cheap Treats!
It’s piggie time again!
We've expanded a little this year and picked up four 50% Kunekune x Red Wattle x 50% Berkshire piglets to raise. Two are for our family, and two are to raise and sell so we can offer high quality well raised pork to local consumers. These little ones are adorable, and at nine weeks old, … Continue reading It’s piggie time again!
You were a good dog, Cooper!
Cooper, you weren't the sharpest tool in the shed, but you were a good dog. You loved us all, and you only wanted to be with us all the time. You loved car and truck rides, and you never got car sick. You were a good dog. You never chased the chickens (just that one … Continue reading You were a good dog, Cooper!
Freebies are always good!
Someone posted on a local Facebook group that she had two broken refrigerators and a washer for free - first come, first serve! We use broken refrigerators to store our pig feed and cattle feed, and I've been watching for another for a while to store the chicken feed. I immediately woke Ted up from … Continue reading Freebies are always good!
All day on Saturday…
...Ted worked on cutting down a tree that fell across the small chicken yard and driveway. He started working at noon, and we just finished now at 6:37 p.m. The tree fell sometime last night during the storm and smashed down two t-posts and about 16' of fencing. Once he got the entire tree cut … Continue reading All day on Saturday…
Where have I been?
It's been twelve days since I've posted anything on the blog! So what in the world have I been up to??? I'm glad you've asked! I teach at an e-school (online/virtual school) in Ohio. Our summer break is not the entire summer like most school districts get; instead, I get from June 16th through July … Continue reading Where have I been?
Little farm boy
We came late to the farming venture. Our kids are now 25, 21 1/2, 16 1/2, and 9 1/2 years old. We always had some chickens scratching around and sometimes a goat, but Jake is the only one that's grown up with pretty much all of these farm animals constantly around...and he loves them all. … Continue reading Little farm boy
Bad dogs and dumb chickens
These are bad dogs (sometimes). They're usually great, but every spring, they hear the call of the wild and go into straight up wolf mode, killing any chicken that gets outside the chicken yard. Last week, they killed three. They don't even eat them; they just break their necks and leave them near the fence … Continue reading Bad dogs and dumb chickens
Oops!
The new driver in the house needs to practice backing up out of the driveway a little more. LOL Nobody was hurt, including chickens and turkeys. The door bracing (on the side of the little door where the hinges are) got knocked askew. With four brackets and thirty minutes, this will be good as new.
